Suu Kyi asks US lawmakers for help in democratising Myanmar

From Lalit K Jha Washington, Jun 22 (PTI) Myanmar's pro-democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi addressed the US Congress through video link today and sought its help to implement a UN Human Rights Council resolution to pave way for the "real road to democracy" in her country. The resolution, passed recently, deals with the issues of political prisoners, freedom of association and information and independence of the judiciary, and the right of the UN Human Rights Rapporteur, to visit the country."I've never made a statement before a committee of the United States Congress, so I'm not quite sure how to go about it. I would simply like to use this occasion to request that you do whatever you can to help us implement the United Nations Human Rights Council Resolution, because that will open up the real road to democracy for all of us," Suu Kyi told US lawmakers. The rare video message was played at a hearing on Myanmar by a key Congressional Committee. She said her country was not an open society and needed help to become one."So, I would like to ask you to continue with your work with confidence in what you are doing, and with confidence and the fact that your work is much appreciated," the popular pro-democracy leader said.Suu Kyi said the UN Human Rights Council Resolution passed in March covers all of Myanmar's political needs."The requests, the urgings, the demands of this resolution are very much in line with what we in Burma think is needed to start Burma along the genuine process of democratisation," she said
